Creative Project – Rough Draft

Creative Project Rough Draft:

This creative project will consist of creating a social media marketing strategy for a nonprofit, Muncie Delaware Clean and Beautiful, in the Muncie community. Chris Wilkey and myself will be working together to complete this project.

  • Define the problem/issue you wish to improve/address
    • We wish to motivate more people to be involved in the local community and keep Muncie a cleaner place.
  • Identify your audience (Who are you trying to reach?)
    • Our broad audience will be anyone who is a member of the Muncie community. Our specific audience will be the students of Ball State University.
  • Incorporate articles, research, and case studies to provide evidence that your problem/issue exists and is worthy of addressing (What is the problem? How do you know it’s a problem?)
    • We are working with the company in our management class to help reestablish the non-profit. We think this would be a good way of helping them find a broader volunteer base and create interest in the non-profit. We have talked to the company and their biggest problem is that no one knows about the organization.
  • Propose and support a specific plan of action, using research to justify your plan (Why have you chosen to address the problem in the manner you’ve chosen? Who says your approach will be effective?)
    • We are going to create a social media plan for the organization including:
      • Twitter
      • Facebook
      • Linked-in
      • Website copy editing
      • Blogging
    • This is a free way to advertise the organization since they do not have a budget to spend on marketing.
    • This approach has been used by other non-profit organization and actual for-profit businesses. This gives us the perception that it will work for this non-profit.
    • We plan to be in contact with Keep Delaware County Beautiful throughout this project.
  • Include a minimum of six reputable sources to support your arguments effectively for the draft, and then add an additional six sources for your final project.

Distribution of the work is as follows:

Chris Wilkey:

  • Website copy editing
  • LinkedIn
  • Twitter

MaryBeth Kowalinski:

  • Facebook
  • Blogging

Best of Animation

Animation is being used more and more frequently in our society. These are just a few exceptional examples that I have come across:

Entertainment:

Animation is now used in television shows as cutout and collage animation. An example of this would be South Park.

“South Park is perhaps the most well-known animated TV show that uses cutout and collage animation. The characters are cutout, and occasionally collage animation is used, such as when creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker use photos of Mel Gibson or Saddam Hussein to animate characters.”

Education:

As a child, my parents read me stories before going to bed. With the technology we have today, parents can now use animated stories if they so desire. I came across animated Aesop’s fables. Having children listen to these prior to an age they can read is a great learning tool. Although they can’t read the story, they are still learning the message behind it in a fun way.

Marketing and Advertising:

Animax Entertainment is an Emmy Award winning creative studio that produces content for their clients anywhere from animated virtual worlds and video games to social media and TV shows. Their goal is to help their clients tell fun stories in many different ways.

Life As We Knew It

“Back in my day” is a phrase I have become accustomed to hearing from my parents. Their earliest memories of technology date back to when eight tracks were still around, calculators were the latest and greatest invention and computers, astronomical in size, used floppy disks. Mention some of these items to youth today and all you will get is a blank stare. This goes to show the rapid pace at which technology is changing life as we know it, or should I say knew it. Some people may be leery of the rapid advancements of technology, but it is technology that has impacted change in the world.

Technology is changing the way the world functions. Social media has become an outlet for revolution. The Arab Spring in Egypt is the perfect example of this. Revolutions through social media are ways for people to come together and believe in themselves again. Through seeing other peers express similar beliefs they are encouraged to state their opinions. Some risky individuals, encouraged by the new found freedom through social media, have begun to create new global web applications. Web entrepreneurs, who had been hiding in the dark, now recognize the impact they can make through technology.

People feel safe expressing their beliefs through social media. Since they are not allowed to protest on the streets, social media becomes their voice. Although Twitter and Facebook make a huge impact, their impact is limited. People are able to anonymously protest through social media; therefore, they can avoid government wrath. The main goal is that is brings issues to light and links people together. Technology has given a voice to people who have been forced to repress their beliefs their entire life.

Cell phones are powerful devices. They can connect us to anyone, anywhere. These days people do not leave home without their cell phones. If we accidentally leave our cell phone at home, we feel like a piece of us is missing. Some people worry that we have actually become addicted to our cell phones, but there are advantages people rarely consider. In America, we take for granted that everyone in the world has access to mobile communication just like we always have. Just a few years ago, you would have only seen a select few people with the privileges of mobile access that we have. Today, thanks to the advances in technology, more and more people in developing countries have mobile access. The increase in mobile technology has caused the digital divide to shrink and in turn reduce poverty for the rural poor. The use of cell phones enables faster and more flexible communication. Instead of having to spend an entire day walking into town, people living in rural areas can now conduct business over the phone.

Technology is allowing people of limited means to gain a higher degree of control over their current situations. In essence, technology is putting a persons future in ones own hands. In developing countries, people need products that they can use to improve their way of life. Technology allows new products to be developed constantly. Even the smallest inventions can change people’s lives. Take for example the light bulb. In developing countries this invention was extremely significant. The light bulb enabled people to work longer as it extended their work day. The more hours they could work, the more money they could make and the faster they could remove themselves from poverty. The rapid spread of technological advances has had a significant impact on changing the developing countries throughout the world. Organizations such as Kiva are helping to eliminate poverty by providing loans that change lives.

Video games are becoming a major part of people’s lives. Before people start to judge video and online games, they need to open up their eyes to the benefits they offer. What people once considered mindless and shallow games, are now viewed as impossible to put down. Games today are much easier to play, but require a higher degree of activity. Not all the games are designed for fun. Video games can also be used as learning tools.  For several decades games have been used for educational and recruitment purposes, but people have been slow to recognize this shift. More recently; however, doctors have taken an interest in creating video games that can be used to train physicians, educate patients, improve fitness and help treat addicts and the mentally ill. As the saying goes, “practice makes perfect.” Thanks to technology doctors can now perfect their skills with the use of video games which takes health care to a whole new level. The power of video games does not stop there.

Video games can also be used to educate people on issues such as war.  Most people have no idea what is really going on in the wars that currently exist as they are removed from the situation. Several games have been developed that are based on the current wars. When people play these games they are educated on what is happening in the world around them. Just like in the medical field, training games have also been developed for military personal. Being trained in a variety of simulations enables military personal to have confidence in their actions for when they are actually in combat. Technology has therefore improved not only our healthcare system but our military system as well.

Politics, altered by technology, is now more widespread than ever. Everyone in the world knows the latest news on governments around the world. Communication is much easier in today’s day and age and people have a greater access to information. People are therefore more apt to engage in public speech and to take collective action. Social media has essentially become a coordinating tool for political movements. People are more willing to demand change through the increased freedom that social media allows.

The past presidential election, Obama set the standard for social media use. With his campaign, emerging media has become important to not only our nation’s history, but the worlds history. Through his social media campaign, Obama was able to get his message across as well as energize his followers to action. The campaign was a huge success not because of the use of social media, but how social media was used. Each aspect of social media worked in conjunction with each other by promoting the singular message of Obama’s campaign. His continued success is due to the fact that he maintains his social media campaign. When the election ended, his Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube campaigns continued. Republicans fell behind this past election, but after seeing the impact that social media had they are prepared for the battle.

There is no doubt the world has been altered by technology. The presence of technology is only going to become more prevalent as time goes on. People need to learn to embrace the changes that occur as a result of technology. Technology is a force that will continue to change the world in new ways each and every day. Clay Shirky sums it up well:

PhotoShop Basics

Ball State University provides several resources for students to take advantage of on campus. One of those resources is Lynda.com, which offers online software training and tutorials. Students have access to thousands of videos that they can access at their convenience anywhere on campus.

As a Marketing major, it is important to understand the basics of design. With limited knowledge of Photoshop, I decided it would be a good idea to use the tutorials to learn a little more. I selected the course “Up and Running with Photoshop for Design”. Outlined below are the elements of Photoshop that I was able to learn about.

Introduction

Understanding the Image File

  • This section instructs you on how to start an image. You learn the different ways to open and close single as well as multiple images.
  • Next you learn how to get around inside an image. You learn to zoom in, zoom out and pan around an image. He provides you with keyboard shortcuts and tips in order to move around more fluidly in an image.
  • Finally, he introduces selections and layers. A jpeg image is a flat file and contains no layers. Working with layers inside Photoshop enables you to easily make changes to an image.

Selecting and Compositing

  • He introduces the most basic selection tools within Photoshop, the marquee and lasso tool. The shortcut for the marquee tool is m. He details how to register a selection by pressing the spacebar as you drag with the tool. When ensuring you are dragging exactly vertically, the shift key should be held. Next he details how to use the lasso tool to encompass objects. Pressing alt + click gives you better control to surround an object more closely.
  • Next we learn to select regions of color within an image. He details how to use the magic wand tool as well as work with the more detailed color range command. To access the magic wand tool, press shift w. This tool enables you to click within a region of color and select whatever Photoshop considers to be similar. To select more colors you can shift click inside them. To use the color range tool, go to select and choose color range. The color range command is generally better than the magic wand tool, especially when working within a continuous tone photograph.
  • Finally, he teaches how to refine selection outlines and preview adjustments on the fly. He does this by first selecting the color range command and selecting the background. To make sure the image will work on another background, go to the select menu and choose the refine edge command. This command allows you to preview the quality of your selection and adjust the quality. View should be set to default, which is on white. The edge detection feature allows you to revalue edges. The show radius feature should be turned on to see areas that are reevaluated.

Working with Layers

  • We learn to create a layered composition inside of Photoshop. The three ways to create a layer within Photoshop are by clicking ctrl + J to “jump”, the new layer command, or copy and paste.
  • Next we learn to blend layers within Photoshop. This means you can see through one layer inside another layer. We learn how to change opacity by pressing “0-9” on the numberpad.
  • He then shows how to use the adjustment layer to correct the luminous and color of a scanned piece of artwork. He does this through the use of blending modes.
  • He shows how to scale and rotate a layer within Photoshop. To toggle between images you press ctrl + tab. We learn to move and copy a layer.
  • Next we learn to duplicate a series of layers. We learn to copy a layer as you scale or transform it in other ways.
  • Finally, we learn to take an image set against one background and move it onto an entirely new background. To do so, deselect the current background layer and perform a drag and drop.

Working with Type and Effect

  • We learn to create and format type inside Photoshop. Type is always vector based, so you can re-size text anytime that you like so that it will match the resolution size of any image you like. To get to the text tool press the “t” key.
  • Next we learn to apply an automated drop shadow. A drop shadow can be added to any layer within Photoshop. Select the fx icon at the bottom of the layers panel and then choose drop shadow. Multiply is the blend mode you often want to use in the case of a drop shadow.
  • He shows how to create letters that appear to be carved out of a background. Select the fx icon at the bottom of the layers panel and then choose inner shadow.
  • He shows how to create beveled type inside of Photoshop. Select the fx icon and select bevel and emboss.
  • The last exercise he shows how to create 3D type in Photoshop extended.

Using the Paint and Pen Tools

  • He introduces us to the brush tool that is a practical free form painting tool in Photoshop. He recommends to paint on a new layer (ctrl + shift + n). The b key selects the brush tool. Soft press produces a smaller line, while firmly presses produces a thicker line. Right clicking in the image gives you the size and hardness menu. Increase brush size press “]” key. Decrease brush size press “[“. Decrease brush hardness by 25 shift +[, increase brush hardness by 25 shift +]. Switch foreground and background colors, press x key.
  • We learn how to paint inside a selection outline and how to paint in perfectly straight lines. Create a new layer every time you paint a new part of your object. Default foreground and background colors press d key. Go to window, brush command or F5 , then brush tip shape. Take spacing value down.
  • Next we learn to apply fills and gradients inside Photoshop. You can apply them as static modifications so pixels are permanently changed, or as layer effects. To fill an area with a foreground color press alt + backspace. To fill an area with a background color press ctrl + backspace. Gradient/paint bucket tool press g.
  • Finally, we learn how to use the pen tool that is an incredibly flexible drawing tool that allows you to draw one shape at a time.

Working with Layer and Vector Masks

  • We learn how to create and modify a layer mask that allows you to temporarily erase portions of a layer so you can integrate the layer into a larger composition. Right click in layer and make a duplicate composition. Add a layer mask by clicking button that is in the bottom of the layers panel. Temporary modifications are called nondestructive. The gradient tool is great for layers, press g key. Constrain movement by holding shift and drag.
  • We learn to draw shape layers which are essentially path outlines that you put on independent layers and outline with color. The shape layers are vectors based so they can be scaled and transformed without loss in quality.
  • Finally, we look at clipping masks that allow you to take the contents of one layer and mask them with another. Hide/reveal tool palettes by shift + tab. Press tab to hide/reveal toolbar. Press the spacebar to get the hand tool. Go to layer menu and select create clipping mask command to make layer behind it.

Using Smart Objects and Filters

  • We learn to work with smart objects. They enable a huge degree of flexibility. They are containers that protect images. Once a container is inside an image, the image cannot be harmed. Ctrl t to get to the free transform command. To maintain scale while resizing a selection press shift + drag. You are never supposed to scale an image more than once inside Photoshop as the pixels are rewritten. File, place allows you to place an image from disk within an existing composition.
  • Smart filters are dynamic modifiable filter effects that you can apply elusively inside of smart objects in Photoshop.
  • Finally, we learn how to combine many filters together in order to create a smart filter effect.

Saving and Prepress

  • We learn how to save an image from Photoshop. There are three main file formats that you need to know about: the psd, tiff, and jpeg. The asterisk means the file has not been saved. To save everything, then you want to work with Photoshop format. Check the ICC Profile box and click save. To save a flat version of the image to send out to a commercial printer or placement in another design program, use tiff. Turn off layers checkbox. In TIFF options, image compression should be set to LZW. If you want to email this file to somebody, set the format to jpeg as it will deliver the smallest format possible. Apply lossy compression. Save image with a quality setting of 10 or above.
  • Finally we learn how to prepare an image for commercial output so the image can be placed in illustrator or indesign. Go to the image menu and select image size or press ctrl + alt + i. This shows you how big the image is going to print or place. Turn off the resample image textbox. The ideal resolution is 300 pixels per inch. Recommendation for resolution: do not drop below 240.

Conclusion

Upon Completion of the online tutorial, I would highly recommend “Up and Running with Photoshop for Design” to individuals who have minimal knowledge of Photoshop. The instructor made the assumption that viewers had never used Photoshop before; therefore,  the material was explained at the most basic level. I found this extremely helpful being a Photoshop novice. He showed multiple ways of performing actions. Not everyone works the same, so it is good to know the various ways to go about working in Photoshop. The instructor made sure to show how to perform all of the functions on a Mac and PC. This makes the tutorial work for everyone who wants to learn Photoshop. After viewing the tutorial, I now know the basics of Photoshop and will be able to further my skills as I spend more time working in Photoshop.

Tablets Change the World

Every day people come up with new inventions and occasionally, they change the world. In 2010, the iPad was introduced. The tablet has since become an integral part of society. Tablets have redefined the future for computers as these portable devices have functions that enable people to browse the web, read books, e-mail, play games, and watch movies. That is only a short list of their many features. Tablets have become an extension of individuals and have made us more connected than ever before.

As people become more fast paced and want information in the moment, tablets become more and more useful.  Although the tablet has defined its own category, they embody a shrunken laptop or refined smartphone. Tablets have paved the way towards a different approach to computers. The portable device does not require people to haul around a keyboard, mouse or even a huge briefcase full of documents because it is all neatly organized within one device. To keep up with the demands of society, they turn on automatically, have extremely fast touch screens and applications are all downloaded from a single source.

The invention of the tablet has altered many industries. By taking a look at a few of the tablets target markets, we can see how the tablet has the potential to change the world.

Business Industry:

  • Professionals no longer have to carry around laptops and heavy briefcases
  • Presentations can easily be given from the tablet
  • Through facetime, people can connect with each other all around the world

Heath Industry:

  • Health records can be condensed onto the tablet so doctors and nurses do not have to deal with charts
  • Information doctors and nurses need is more easily accessible
  • Saves time as doctors no longer have to search for charts, which enables more patient care
  • Doctors can use the tablet to walk their patient through a visual of their procedure
  • Better relationships are formed between doctors and their patients

Education:

  • Teachers can connect the tablet to the television to give presentations to their classes or connect with other classrooms
  • A range of books can be downloaded and stored
  • People can use the tablet to teach themselves new skills such as a new language or an instrument

The world is becoming a more global place and innovations like tablets are reducing the gap as we are able to connect in ways like never before. The tablet was introduced just in 2010 and has already become an integral part of society. As a new innovation, people have rushed to become part of the competition. This has led to huge advances within the last year, and there is no end is sight for what the tablet can become.

Adaptation

Technological advances have completely altered the field of marketing. Within the last few years, companies have had to drastically alter their marketing strategies in order to remain competitive in a rapidly changing society. The introduction of social media has created huge opportunities for marketers as well as introduced new challenges for marketers to overcome. With all of the new changes technology has brought about to the marketing industry, flexibility is becoming more and more important. The industry is constantly changing and adapting.

Today it is more important than ever for marketers to remain knowledgeable on new marketing techniques and strategies. Technology has created ways for marketers to stay current. The most popular resource for professional development in the marketing community is webinars. Almost 50% of marketing professionals attended a live webinar in 2009. Marketers also found that association websites were a great source for information. Marketers are relying less on printed documents and conferences and more and more on technology.

Since the introduction of social media, the focus of marketers has drastically changed. Social media is not always the right medium for marketers to use, but we cannot deny that social media has drastically changed the way companies market their product or service. According to Erik Qualman, who is the author of Socialnomics, consumers no longer search for product and services, but rather services gain their attention through social media. Chris Brogan shares 50 ways in which marketers can use social media to improve their marketing. These tips just provide a glimpse into the changes that social media has brought about to the marketing industry.

Based on these facts, social media has become a prime marketing tool:

  • LinkedIn has more than 365,000 company profiles
  • More than 12 million small-business professionals are members of LinkedIn
  • More than 1 million small businesses and individuals promote their goods and services on MySpace
  • More than 10,000 websites use Facebook Connect
  • Twitter users spend 66% more dollars on the Internet than non-Twitter users

The use of social media has brought about new challenges for marketers. Marketers must now think differently. Some companies are having problems figuring out how to use social media effectively. If companies cannot expand from the use of TV, radio, and print, then they may miss out on a huge opportunity. The use of social media in marketing is not a guaranteed success, but it has become a tool marketers cannot completely avoid. As Shel Israel, author of the Twitterville: How Businesses Can Thrive in the New Global Neighborhoods stated, “Companies have no choice. This is where their customers are going.”
